In the Top 10 Organization Strategies, step 6 is to make a “to do” list every day.

Remember that only 1 out of 10 plan their day on paper before it begins.

There are several different “to do” lists that are needed to maximize your productivity, and there is a right and wrong way to set them up.

First, you need a Master “To Do” List.  This is a brain dump of everything that comes to mind that you need to do now or sometime in the future.  The easiest way to set up this Master “To Do” List is to take 30 minutes and stroll through your house.  Go room by room and ask yourself, “What needs to be done in this room?”  Then, take a few minutes to ask yourself several probing questions like, “Who do I need to call?” or “Who do I need to follow up with?”  or “What do I need to do for my business?”  In my book Organization for Home-Based Business Professionals I teach you in detail how to set up your Master “To Do” List.

Once you have your Master “To Do” List, you will chose items from that list to form your Daily “To Do” List.  You will want to pick things that have high value to you personally (they align with your goals and mission) or to your business (they will make an impact and increase your business or your paycheck).

  1. I agree, a daily to do list is the GPS for a productive day! I found a planner that is designed to capture the brain dump and then funnel your to do’s, or tasks, into your weekly itinerary. The calendar is called a Planner Pad. Check them out at plannerpad.com. Great blog, Dr Laura!

  2. Natalie, I also used a planner pad at one point, and it is definitely a great tool, especially for the paper-based folks! I only switched to Outlook for the syncing with my Blackberry which made me more mobile.

    Best of luck to you,
