When driving home this morning after dropping my son off at school, I was listening to a CD (always business building, of course, since I have long ago transformed my car into a university on wheels!), and it reminded me of a great story.
How do you boil a frog? Maybe you know the answer. Of course, if you try to put the frog into boiling water, it will jump out. But, instead, if you put your frog in lukewarm water and slowly turn up the heat, by the time it realizes it’s hot, it’s too late and it can’t jump out.
This is also how we drift away from our priorities. It’s a slow and steady process and then we wake up one morning to find that our children are grown and we missed it, or our spouse has grown distant and our marriage is in jeopardy.
We put ourselves in the pot of lukewarm water and slowly make small insignificant wrong decisions over time and one morning we suffer the consequences of years of small bad decisions.
Take stock now and stop the drifting in your life. Are you spending enough time with your children? What about time with your spouse like a date night, or other uninterrupted time? How about your business? Are you watching just a “little” bit of TV each day instead of working, justifying this because you “deserve it”?
This all adds up, but the good news is that when you realize this, and increase your awareness, you can also take steps to proactively correct the situation before you find yourself in a boiling pot of water.
What are you drifting on today and what will you do to correct it?
