31 Goals in 31 Days – Day 23 – Apology Needed

Today’s goal is a personal one.  Many years ago, an incident happened between myself and an extended family member that caused our relationship to be torn apart.  In the 10 years since, we have not spoken, and hardly had any other communication.  In looking at the incident, I feel that there were things that I could have/should have done to prevent the outcome that occurred, and I feel as though I need to apologize for my actions, in hopes of restoring the relationship.

I have come to realize that nearly everyone has a similar story with a friend, family member or loved one.  Some time in the past where things have gone wrong, and a relationship has suffered because of it.  I have also come to realize that the time we have here on earth is unknown.  We could die at any time.

Not to be somber, but it’s simply a fact.  And knowing this fact, I’ve come to realize that life is precious.  Our relationships are precious.  As Og Mandino says, “Treat everyone you meet, friend or foe, loved one or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight.”

So, for me, one thing I can do is take responsibility for what happened, call that person, and apologize for my actions.  That’s the goal for today, with the hope and prayer that this relationship can be restored, the chasm closed.

I’m also looking at any other relationships that are strained to see what I could do to restore them.  Perhaps it’s sending a card, or making a phone call.  It takes courage to take initiative and humble yourself to ask forgiveness of the other.  It matters not if the strain was your fault entirely, their fault entirely, or you were both equally at fault.  Someone has to step up to the plate and take the first step toward restoration.

For me, I’ll make that phone call today.  Family is so important.  Don’t let one more day pass by without telling those around you that you love and appreciate them.  You never know what tomorrow will bring.

To your success,

Dr. Laura
