When open it's the size of a full sheet of paper. In the stores, I believe the refill size is number 3 (the number 2 refill is much smaller, and number 4 is like a regular sheet size). It's definitely something I carry in my purse, but it's big enough to write it. That's a big reason why I created my own, because I wanted it to be portable, yet the size of the writing area had to be sufficient as well, without all the extra "stuff" to carry around.
