It’s day 6 in the 21 day CLEAN program. Things are moving right along. I have to admit there is one thing that I have found to be “hard” on this program. That’s food waste.
The problem lies with the fact that pre-CLEAN, my pantry was not so healthy. Moving in to CLEAN, I went out and bought healthier foods (and non-allergen foods). Since I am the only one eating CLEAN in my home, I am still cooking for my family from my pantry, which is still steadily evolving into a more healthy pantry (as one thing runs out, I buy or make a healthy alternative).
But, sometimes the food that is cooked for the family does not all get eaten, even after leftover buffet days. So, there are times where I have food that needs to be eaten, and I can’t bring myself to throw it out, simply because it’s not entirely “CLEAN”. Today was one of those days. So, I did a semi-CLEAN day today and ate some of the foods that needed to be eaten.
Part of my job, as I see it, is to use the resources that God has provided to me wisely. To me, this includes not wasting. It doesn’t happen a lot, since we are fairly good about eating leftovers, but sometimes there is just too much left…over…
So, here’s what I ate today:
Breakfast – Homemade Breakfast Sandwich
Lunch – Macaroni and Cheese with Peas
Dinner – Tea (wasn’t hungry)
For those wondering what goes in to my breakfast sandwich, here’s my usual way of making them:
Breakfast Sandwich
1 egg, scrambled (we get our eggs from a neighbor, so they are definitely pastured)
1 sausage patty, cooked (you can use whatever kind you like, including turkey sausage)
1 slice cheddar cheese
1 English muffin (or you can use a buttermilk biscuit – I sometimes make spelt buttermilk biscuits that are yummy!)
butterCut English muffin in half, and heat in microwave 30 seconds or toast in toaster oven. Spread butter on English muffin. Layer 1/2 the cheddar cheese, then sausage patty (cooked), the other half of the cheese, and then the egg, (cooked, like an omelet). Top with other half of English muffin. Smush it all down together, and then wait about 5 minutes for it too melt the cheese and cool down. Serve and enjoy!
So, it wasn’t exactly a CLEAN day, but I couldn’t let the food go to waste, and it could have been worse. Back to the smoothies and salads tomorrow!
To your success,
Dr. Laura

I hear you, Laura! I can’t stand to waste food. As we approach the holidays – special meals – kids home for a month from college, etc. I am focusing on really cleaning out. I always make a weekly menu list, at least for the evening meal, and am scouring the fridge, freezer and pantry to use up everything I can in those menus and buying as little as possible. Benefits: making room for holiday foods, focusing on fresh and healthy meals right up to the holiday frenzy (after getting rid of all the junk) and saving on the grocery bill! I know we’ll overspend in December. Plus the challenge is kind of fun to see just how short I can make the grocery list!! Downside: My husbands not too thrilled with the selections. Oh well
He’ll be glad in the end.
Good for you Tari! I know it’s the same problem for me again – we have some not so healthy leftovers that I “need” to eat but I would rather focus on healthier choices. I’m getting ready to do a modified CLEAN program starting Monday, so trying to eat some of the leftovers this weekend. But, ugh…wish I didn’t have to, but can’t waste it either!
