We just wrapped up blueberry season here, and every year we go pick blueberries. It’s become a tradition. We are blessed to have two different local places to go and pick blueberries!
This summer went by so quickly, that we just caught the tail-end of the blueberry season (whew!), and so I gathered up my two volunteers children and headed off for a few hours of manual labor fun.
We picked for about an hour (and would have gone longer, but someone had to go to the bathroom, and there are no bathrooms there!) and this is what we got…
We already had some berries in the freezer, so I decided to dehydrate them. Did you know that dehydrating food is a great way to use less storage space, because here’s what we got in the end…
That’s it. Not even ONE PINT of dehydrated blueberries! What a space-saver
And, continuing the blueberry theme, we went to a local workshop for children and made fresh blueberry jam (we used the honey recipe from the package of Pomona’s Universal Pectin) and buttermilk drop biscuits. Yum. And just for fun, we also make homemade butter (Take some heavy cream, stick it in a jar, and shake it for half an hour. It will separate into butter, which clumps together, and buttermilk, which is the liquid left behind.) to spread on the biscuits as well.
Buttermilk Drop Biscuits
2 cups all-purpose flour (can be part whole wheat)
2 tsp baking powder
½ tsp baking soda
¼-1/2 tsp salt
5-6 tbsp butter, cut into pieces
1 cup buttermilkPreheat oven to 450. Whisk dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry knife until the pieces are the size of large crumbs. Add the buttermilk and stir until well-moistened. The batter should be sticky, but not smooth. Use two spoons to scrape into 12 muffin cups lined with muffin liners. Bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes.
What do you do with your blueberries?

Hi Dr. Laura, I have 2 pints of lovely blueberries in the fridge right now. I am going to be making blueberry cobbler with them but using pecan flour instead of wheat flour. The pecan flavor goes so very nicely with the blueberries I’ve found. I came up with this recipe when my husband and I went grain free for about 5-6 months back in the spring and even though we are both eating grains again in moderation (and handling them well I am happy to say) this pecan cobbler kind of stuck and we enjoy it so much (I have the recipe on my blog if you are interested in checking it out, by the way). Thanks for stopping by Monday Mania with your blueberry ideas!!

Hi Dr. Laura! Seriously, I have a dehydrator, but never used it to do something like this and I was simply AMAZED at how compact they become! Very good to know for future reference. Your drop biscuits look perfect for a saturday morning. My husband and I both grew up with blue berry bushes in the back yard and we would have them for breakfast, like cereal with milk just poured over.
Thanks for sharing on the two for tuesday recipe blog hop.

Thanks Alex. I too was amazed as they kept shrinking and shrinking. I just dehydrated 4 shelves full of cherry tomatoes and didn’t even get a 1/2 pint jar full of “sun-dried” tomatoes at the end!
I would love to have blueberries in the back yard (and we have the climate for it), but the bears like them too, and so I don’t plant them! Family safety is more important

Oh, I love blueberries in any form!!! Yeah, when I dehydrated some last year, I was like
! Where did they go, LOL!? Tasty, though. And I love the sound of the drop biscuits, too. Thanks so much for sharing this with Two for Tuesdays this week

You are welcome girlichef. My children loved the drop biscuits, so I knew they had “passed” the test.

We can’t seem to get enough blueberries this year. I mostly eat them with yogurt for breakfast!

I just freeze them and we add them to our smoothies – but I should dehydrate some – next time ;o) Thanks for linking to Two for Tuesdays!

Christy, I usually freeze for smoothies too, but being as I just got a new Excalibur dehydrator a month ago, we have been experimenting with dehydrating. I didn’t mention in my post, but should have, that we also made blueberry/honey fruit leather in the dehydrator too! YUM!

I went blueberry crazy! This year I froze some, dehydrated some, preserved some in peach Schnapps and baked with a whole bunch!

Jill,
Ohhh…in peach Schnapps sounds absolutely sinful. Never tried that one! I just love blueberries! I am upset that we didn’t get in on the main season, or we would have had even more to work with!

I don’t have blueberries
Plenty of other fruit though, and I hear ya about saving space. Whew, the freezer and pantry shelves fill up fast this time of year. Great that you reminded us about dehyrating for Two for Tuesday.

That is sad that you have no blueberries!
And, speaking of dehydrating, I just dehydrated 4 shelves of cherry tomatoes and it didn’t even give me 1/2 pint worth of “sun-dried” tomatoes at the end! I’ve been having fun experimenting with my new Excalibur dehydrator
